The Wedding Quest: Planning Your Perfect Wedding in Bristol

Planning a wedding can feel like a quest in itself.
At the beginning, it all seems relatively straightforward. Following the euphoria of your engagement you set about deciding where to get married and who to invite. Seems easy, right?
That’s when the wedding planning list starts to grow and so does the budget!
Photography. Videography. Wedding dress. Bridesmaids' outfits. Suits. Flowers. Stationery. Transport. Food. Music. Entertainment. And, of course, the wedding ceremony itself.
Before long, what started as a simple idea of celebrating your love has turned into a full-scale wedding planning adventure! And everyone seems to have differing ideas.
Choosing your wedding venue
One of the first big decisions is choosing your wedding venue in Bristol or the South West, or maybe further afield.
Perhaps you have your heart set on a country house, hotel or barn. Maybe you want a relaxed restaurant wedding, a beautiful outdoor ceremony or something much smaller and more intimate.
There really are no rules about what your wedding has to look like. The important thing is finding somewhere that feels right for you as a couple.
Remember if your chosen venue isn’t licensed for weddings you could still host a wedding ceremony there with an independent celebrant providing you get legally married in what’s known as a ‘2 + 2 wedding ceremony’. This could be a simple mid week ceremony for you and your partner plus two witnesses.
In Bristol you can book a 2+2 wedding on a Monday or Tuesday in the Statutory Room.
Finding your wedding photographer and videographer
Once the venue and guest list start taking shape, it's time to think about how you'll capture your wedding day. Have you thought about a wedding videographer?
Photographs capture how the day looked, but video can bring back the sounds, movement and emotion — the laughter, the music, the speeches and the moment you hear your partner say their vows.
We are fortunate to have a wide choice of wedding photographers in Bristol. You might prefer formal photographs, maybe something more relaxed documentary-style images or a mixture of both.
Some of the photographers I’ve met work with videographers so get your chosen photographer to suggest someone who compliments their style. And see if they will do a pre wedding shoot to get to know you both.
The wedding dress quest
Then there's the quest for ‘the’ right wedding dress.
For some brides, finding the perfect dress is one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding. For others, it can feel like an adventure they'd rather approach with a large glass of wine!
The secret is to do your research and set a budget - well a starting one at least! Here in Bristol we have a choice of fantastic boutiques selling bespoke and vintage dresses, plus we even have several charity shops with dedicated bridal sections.
Book a time to look and try on several dresses - be open to suggestions and you are bound to find ‘the one’!
With your dress found you can then add your accessories and give your bridesmaids a colour scheme or style to wear and maybe a steer to the groom and his groomsmen.
Flowers, stationery and all the finishing touches
Flowers can completely transform a wedding venue.
From the bridal bouquet and buttonholes to ceremony flowers and table arrangements, flowers will create the atmosphere and style you've chosen for your wedding. Not all arrangements need to be fresh flowers, many florists offer faux floral arrangements that can make excellent backdrops, arches and even table decorations.
Even in today’s digital world you’ll want some stationery to carry through your wedding theme and tell guests where to be and what they’re eating! Invitations, orders of service, menus, place names and table plans all need to be designed, ordered and sent.
What about transport?
Depending on where you're getting married, you might need wedding cars, a vintage bus, a minibus or some other form of transport.
The list really does seem endless! Have you still got a handle on your budget?
Don't forget the wedding ceremony
And amongst all this wedding planning, there is one thing that deserves plenty of attention: your wedding ceremony.
Don’t think of your wedding ceremony as simply the part you have to get through before the celebrations begin - use it as the heart of your wedding day.
It is the moment when you publicly declare your love and commitment to each other, surrounded by the people who matter most. And it is often the bit people remember most.
So why shouldn't it be as personal and memorable as everything else you've planned, personalised to you and not just a standard script? A registrar or Church led wedding service has minimal personalisation, for a ceremony built around your love story opt for a celebrant-led wedding ceremony.
What is a celebrant-led wedding ceremony?
Unlike a traditional one-size-fits-all ceremony, a celebrant-led wedding ceremony is written around your relationship, your personalities and your story.
It can include your favourite music, a meaningful reading, a symbolic ritual from your heritage and, of course, your own personal vows.
Whether you want to honour family traditions, celebrate your shared history or create something completely unique, your wedding ceremony should reflect your love story.
The great thing about a celebrant-led wedding ceremony is there’s no requirement to follow a particular script or include traditions simply because they've always been done that way, your wedding ceremony is built around you two.
Do you need a registrar as well as a celebrant?
It's worth remembering that a celebrant-led wedding ceremony is not, by itself, legally binding in England and Wales. You always need your wedding formalised by a registrar.
Many Bristol venues are licensed which means you can pay for the registrar to come to the venue. Or you can opt for a non licensed venue and complete the legal formalities separately at the register office.
The beauty of separating your legal marriage and your wedding ceremony means you can have a personalised celebrant-led wedding ceremony wherever and whenever you choose — whether that's at your wedding venue, in a garden, outdoors or somewhere that has special meaning to you.
This gives you much more freedom to create the wedding celebration you actually want.
Your wedding doesn't have to follow the rules
Perhaps you're planning a big Bristol wedding surrounded by everyone you know.
Or maybe you want something small and relaxed.
Perhaps you've already been together for years and simply want to celebrate finally making it official, or to renew your wedding vows after a significant milestone.
Maybe this is your second wedding and you're looking for something completely different this time around.
Whatever your plans, your wedding doesn't have to look like anyone else's.
You don't need to follow every wedding tradition - do what's right for you both.
You don't need to recreate something you've seen on Pinterest.
And you certainly don't need to spend a fortune trying to create the "perfect" wedding!
Enjoy the wedding quest
Yes, planning a wedding can sometimes feel overwhelming.
There will be decisions, spreadsheets, appointments, budgets and probably a few moments when you wonder why you ever started!
But don't forget what you're actually planning.
You're planning a day to celebrate the two of you.
And at the end of the wedding quest comes the moment that really matters — standing together, surrounded by the people you love, making your promises and beginning the next chapter of your life together.
That's why your ceremony deserves to be more than just another item on the wedding planning checklist.
Your ceremony. Your story. Your way.
