Why Friendship Deserves a Ceremony Too

Four women celebrating a gratitude ceremony
Celebrating 25 years of friendship

When we think of ceremonies, we often think of weddings, naming ceremonies or funerals. But what if we celebrated the relationships that quietly shape our lives every day?

A Gratitude Ceremony creates that opportunity. It offers a moment to reflect on shared memories, express appreciation, celebrate milestones, and recognise the people who have helped shape our lives.

Recently, I created a Gratitude Ceremony to celebrate 25 years of friendship between me and three remarkable women. It was a beautiful reminder that friendship is one of life's greatest gifts and, just like any other significant milestone, deserves to be acknowledged.

A Friendship That Began with New Beginnings

Our story began in 2001 when we met as first-time mums at an antenatal clinic, all expecting babies in November. None of us imagined that chance meeting would become a friendship lasting a quarter of a century.

As new mums, we shared the excitement and uncertainty of parenthood. Over the years we celebrated birthdays, watched our children grow, supported one another through life's challenges, and shared countless laughs. Our friendship evolved alongside our families, becoming a constant through every stage of life.

Celebrating More Than the Years

This ceremony wasn't simply about marking 25 years on a calendar. It was about celebrating laughter, unwavering support, trust, loyalty and the countless everyday moments that have strengthened our friendship over time.

It was an opportunity to honour where our journey began, reflect on everything we have experienced together, and look forward with excitement to the years still to come.

As a keepsake from the day, I gave each friend a small engraved plant pot that read:

Celebrating 25 Fabulous Years

A Golden Chain of Friends

Clare • Diana • Karyn • Libby

A few simple words that perfectly captured a friendship built over twenty-five wonderful years.

Could a Gratitude Ceremony Be Right for You?

Not every important life event fits into the traditional milestones we usually celebrate.

Perhaps you'd like to honour a lifelong friendship, celebrate a retirement, mark a special anniversary, thank a mentor, or simply gather the people you love to acknowledge the journey you've shared together.

Our Gratitude Ceremony was wonderfully simple—a short trip down memory lane in my garden, followed by a relaxed BBQ. There were stories, laughter, moments of reflection and plenty of time to enjoy each other's company.

Your ceremony could look completely different. It could be held in your favourite place, include music, readings, symbolic rituals or personal tributes. There are no rules—only the opportunity to create something meaningful that reflects the people and relationships you want to celebrate.

Sometimes the most meaningful words we can say are simply:

"Thank you for being part of my story."

If you're looking for an independent celebrant to create a bespoke Gratitude Ceremony celebrating friendship, family or another important milestone, I'd love to help you create a ceremony that's personal and unique to you.
